Bringing Punk Back to MRHS

By Rowan H.

A student band is on the rise with their first official demo release on Spotify in September.

Skipper is a student band that was started by Liam C., a junior at Mountain Range High School, and Jackson G., a former student here at Mountain Range.  After almost a year of rehearsal and practice, Skipper officially released its first instrumental named “Demo 1” on September 25th.

Liam C. lived in Vermont and moved from New York City and then to Colorado. “I’d like to say I grew up in New York, but I didn't… But when I did live there, I lived in both a small town and in New York City. What I saw was that people in the city were fully, authentically  themselves, while in small towns, they all strive to be the same. It just made me think differently about being different.” This was Liam’s young implication of punk ideology. Along with his parents, who were very vocal and open about their beliefs.

Liam C. says his music is his number one creative outlet, claiming: “If I can’t have a creative outlet, I’ll go insane. Music is something I can do all the time. It’s like another language where you can translate your thoughts into something people can hear and feel the emotion without even saying anything, there’s nothing else like it.”

Liam and Jackson both keep their punk aspects in their music through lyrics that “get to the point” and explain their meaning and motivations for music. Liam states, “When we write lyrics, we don’t sugar coat anything. Mainstream music wants to leave everything up to interpretation; we tell people exactly what we think, completely unfiltered.”

Liam released a sneak peek of what Skipper is planning next. “We are thinking about making a full album, but it’s hard to manage both songwriting and school. We also need an album name and cover. Mr. Tyler told us one that we liked. An album called ‘Skin Slippage.’”

When asked about expanding Skipper to a larger fanbase, Liam and Jackson both say that they really don’t care otherwise, and the band exists simply because they want it to. “We just wanna try local gigs in the future, y’know?”
