Every year the Mountain Range High School (MRHS) seniors have the opportunity to reduce their schedules during their Second Semester This policy was designed to help with crowded school building and give seniors a flexible schedule, but this also comes with some non-negotiable guidelines.
The Origin of Schedule Reductions
Mr. Lohmeyer, MRHS Assistant Principal, explains: “The idea for schedule reductions really came out of COVID. During that time, we wanted to limit the number of students in hallways and buildings while ensuring seniors with enough credits stayed on track for graduation. The policy has since evolved to maintain that balance while emphasizing meaningful engagement.”
Eligibility and Rules
In order to qualify for a reduced schedule, seniors must meet the following requirements:
• Earn at least 21 credits by the end of the first semester.
• Maintain reliable transportation to leave campus during off periods.
• Stay enrolled in at least four classes, including three core classes (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, or CTE).
Certain courses, such as AP, Concurrent Enrollment (CE), and Pathway-specific English 12 classes, cannot be dropped. “These courses are tied to commitments like AP exam fees and college readiness standards,” Lohmeyer noted.
A Balancing Act
In order to ensure students stay engaged in their school and classwork the district makes sure that there’s a balance with classes. “We didn’t want students disengaging from school entirely by only taking a couple of non-core classes,” Lohmeyer said. “A meaningful schedule supports their transcripts and helps them stay on track to graduate.”
Athletics and Activities
For senior athletes the criteria is a little more stringent. In order for them to be able to participate in athletics they have to remain in at least five classes. Failure to meet these requirements impact eligibility for extracurricular participation.
Timeline for Adjustments
The deadline to apply for schedule reductions is in mid-December . Adjustments are made in two phases:
1. Before winter break for students with C’s or better.
2. After winter break for students with D’s or F’s.
Conclusion
Senior schedule reductions at MRHS provide flexibility while ensuring students remain academically engaged. As Lohmeyer emphasized, “The goal is to strike a balance between reducing stress and maintaining meaningful participation in school life.”
