Welcome to the Screen Age-- And how to Escape it

By Rowan H.

Mountain Range High School Math teacher Ms. Street offers the Outdoors Club as a way to explore the true beauty of nature and give kids a chance to explore and get away from mundane everyday life.

In today's modern society, phones and screens take up most teens' daily lives. According to an article by COSMO Technologies, teenagers aged 14 through 17 spend an average of 8 hours and 40 minutes on their phone a day. Another article by a hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, describes how social media and “Doomscrolling” negatively impacts teens' brain development. Mountain Range offers an alternative, to be free in nature with friends, for roughly no cost at all!

The Outdoors Club meets to make plans to go on field trips, create fundraisers, hiking trips, and more. You can follow these updates over the years of where the Outdoors Club fundraisers will be through posters in the halls and asking Ms. Street or a member.

Senior Keegan P, a new member of the Outdoors Club, describes his experience as “almost spiritual” to be in nature. “The Outdoors Club goes on field trips and adventures every Wednesday. Last week, we went to Riverdale Veterans Memorial, and then in a few weeks we’ll be going to the Mountains, and then a few days after, we’re going to Emerald Lake.”

These fun trips are not free, however, and the Outdoors Club needs support and funding. On Oct 2nd, The Outdoors Club is hosting a fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse. According to sophomore Lea G, who is the President of the Outdoors Club: “Once reaching the minimum donation ($5), you will receive a free appetizer card, and half of the profits made that night will be donated to the Outdoors Club.” So, bring your family and friends to Texas Roadhouse this Wednesday to support nature and developing minds.
