On the first day of his second term in Presidency, Donald J Trump signed a series of executive orders. The American Bar Association defines an executive order as a “ signed,
written, and published directive from the President of the United States that manages operations of the federal government.” These orders include:
Securing the border. Trump promised in his inaugural address that “all illegal entry will be halted.” By signing this order, Trump has declared a national emergency at the US-Mexico border. Troops have been deployed to enhance security. The border wall’s construction has been resumed and the “Remain in Mexico” programme has been reinstated. This requires immigrants seeking asylum to remain in Mexico during their immigration proceedings. Intentions to end birthright citizenship, the guarantee of citizenship to anyone born on US soil, have been announced. This is a right protected by the 14th amendment and could pose many immediate and pressing legal challenges in the event it is revoked. Cartels and international gangs have been designated “global terrorists,” which expands governmental powers to combat these groups.
Pardoning 1500 individuals convicted of participation in the January 6, 2021 Capital attack. Trump stated, “This proclamation ends a grave national injustice that has been perpetrated upon the American people over the last four years and begins a process of national reconciliation.” These pardons wipe the slate of those convicted, including Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of far-right group Proud Boys and was initially sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy after the attack on the Capital.
“Restoring biological truth.” To paraphrase, this orders the federal government to only recognize male and female sexes. The order states, “sex shall refer to an individual’s immutable biological classification as either male or female.” However, “sex” does not cover the concept of “gender identity.”
Pausing the TikTok ban. The TikTok ban has been suspended for 75 days, allowing time for a US company to potentially buy TikTok, which would prevent a complete ban.
Some other important orders include:
Renaming Mount Denali in Alaska to Mount McKinley;
Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America;
Ending “diversity, equity, and inclusion” programmes in the federal government;
Establishing a Department of Government Efficiency;
Pushing development of Alaska’s resources such as oil, gas and minerals;
Restoring the death penalty for severe crimes;
Revoking security clearances of former government officials involved in election interference;
Announcing the USA’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization.
